Camaro ZL1 Joins the 11-second Club

DETROIT A few days ago the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was officially named a member of the exclusive “11-second” club. To conquer this feat Chevrolet engineers turned an 11.93-second/116-mph quarter-mile elapsed run time in a showroom-stock automatic Camaro ZL1 and an 11.96-second ET at 117 mph in a manual ZL1.
By joining the 11 second club the Camaro ZL1 distanced itself even further from competitors. Very few other production vehicles can run the quarter-mile as quickly as the ZL1 or reach 0-60 in 4 seconds, however the Camaro ZL1 can accomplish this and more with street-legal, factory-issued components.
For perspective on the amazing power of the Camaro ZL1, most NHRA-sanctioned racetracks require a five point roll bar for vehicles that run 11.49 or quicker. The 11.93-second ET in a stock ZL1 tested by the engineers was equipped with factory-issued Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2  tires developed specifically for it, putting the car only 0.44-seconds away from that additional racing safety requirement. This means that drivers using special tires on their ZL1 for racing purposes should make sure they are ready to handle the monster that is the Camaro ZL1.
Ready for the Drag Strip
The original 1969 Camaro ZL1 is still renowned on the drag strip. For this reason, Chevrolet expected its fans to test the 21st century edition on the strip.
To make the ZL1 the Camaro team re-engineered 30 percent of a Camaro 2SS, adding special modifications just for the drag strip.
For example, the ZL1 features a 9.9-inch rear differential mounted in a cast iron center section to withstand the heavy loads of repeated hard launches. It also features a standard differential cooler that lowers the vehicles temperature up to 100 degrees F for improved performance and longevity.
Manual transmission ZL1’s are equipped with launch control, which automatically modulates engine torque for the best-possible acceleration without excessive wheel spin. Every time the driver pushes the throttle to the floor, the system holds a predetermined engine speed until the driver releases the clutch. Then, the system modulates engine torque 1,000 times per second to maximize the available traction. To top it off, mode 5 of launch control is uniquely calibrated for drag strips that use VHT or similar traction-enhancing compounds on the starting line.
The Camaro ZL1 is on sale now with a suggested retail price of $54,995 – which also includes a $900 destination charge. It offers an optional 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission that includes TapShift control for $1,185. The Camaro ZL1 convertible goes on sale this summer.
For more information on the ZL1’s entrance into the 11 second club go to: http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/chevrolet/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2012/May/0504_camaro_zl1

Chevrolet Announces Final Curtain Call of the Avalanche
Chevy will feature 2013 Chevy Avalanches as Black Diamond editions
After 12 years on the Chevy lineup, it is time to say good bye to the Chevrolet Avalanche.
General Motors announced yesterday that the 2013 model year will be the last for the Chevy Avalanche. For the last unveiling of the Avalanche, GM revealed that all 2013 Avalanche models will come standard with the Black Diamond package, which includes additional equipment and a new badge.
The Chevy Avalanche was originally shown as a concept during the 2000 Detroit Auto Show and would go on sale in 2001 as a 2002 models.
The Chevy Avalanche was made famous due to two unique features:
1)    It had a foldable midgate which allowed the truck bed to be extended from 5 ft 3 in to 8 ft 2 in
2)    It had lockable storage bins in the side rails of the truck bed with drains located at the bottom of the bins. These holes could be plugged for ice or liquid storage.
GM also announced that it would be cutting the base price of the Avalanche by $2,500. The Avalanche LS will start at $35,980, plus a dealer freight charge.
For the final model year of production, the Avalanche LS will include a rear view camera, rear park assist, fog lamps and remote start. The LT model will have a standard rear camera.
The vehicle is sold with a 5.3 liter V8 engine that is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and GM's cylinder-deactivating Active Fuel Management technology, which allows a V6 or V8 engine to essentially "turn off" half of the cylinders when carrying lighter loads in order to improve fuel economy

Impala will see a new redesign for 2014

A front view of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala.

NEW YORK -- Today at the New York auto show, General Motors will unveil the much anticipated (and long-delayed) redesign of the Chevrolet Impala. Chevrolet’s newest effort hopes to transform a rental-fleet favorite into a showroom champion.
The next-generation Impala will mark the 10th version of the model introduced in 1958, and its first redesign in 8 years. It shows Chevrolet’s effort to make the Impala more upscale in order to accelerate retail demand and reduce fleet sales.
A rear view of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala. When the redesigned Impala arrives in showrooms about a year from now, GM executives believe it will permanently erase what they acknowledge is the last remaining quality flaw on Chevy's car lineup, which had been called outdated.
GM is aiming to take retail market share from the Ford Taurus, Nissan Maxima, Toyota Avalon and other rivals in a large-sedan market that's been eroding for years as buyers have migrated to SUVs and crossovers.
Shrinking But Strong Market
While the large-sedan market has shrunk, and is expected to keep shrinking, it still remains competitive.
Toyota is also showing a new large sedan this week at the New York Auto Show (which you can read about here: http://newtoyotanews.blogspot.com/2012/03/toyota-to-debut-new-sedan.html), and Hyundai recently launched a redesigned Azera. Chrysler Group also recently refreshed its Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger and Ford is planning a makeover for the 2013 Taurus.
When questioned on the shrinking market, Chris Perry, vice president of global marketing for Chevrolet, stated: "It has been a bit dormant in the full-sized category…But this entry … I think it is going to re-spark some interest in the full-sized sedan."
The price on the redesigned Impala could climb considerably from the current car's price $26,585, which includes shipping. Competitors in the same category such as the Maxima have a sticker price of $32,840 and the Avalon goes for $33,995, also including shipping, so one thing to expect is a price increase.
Changes
To justify the increase in price, GM is giving the 2014 Impala a much bolder design as well as much more advanced technology. They are looking for the Impala to appeal to younger buyers, as well as more upscale buyers.
The 2014 Impala's exterior has a sleeker profile than previous models, sporting a long nose and short rear deck. To show off their sporty side, GM gave the redesigned Impala a wider grille and power dome hood. In order to give it a more upscale look over its predecessor, GM gave the new impala a new set of wrap-around headlamps and front fascia and chrome accents.
Under the hood the 2014 Impala will come equipped with an Ecotec 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine partnered with GM's eAssist mild hybrid system. The 2014 Impala will produce 182 horsepower and is expected to get a whopping 35 mpg on the highway.
Optional on the 2014 Impala will be GM's new Ecotec 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, which pushes 195 hp, as well as a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that pushes an estimated 303 hp. All the engine choices come standard on a six-speed automatic transmission.

The interior of the 2014 Chevrolet Impala.
Interior and Trims
Darren Post, vehicle line director for the Chevrolet Impala, said that the styling changes and technology features inside the car will help GM "shift the distribution to younger buyers."
Inside, GM has equipped the Impala with a package of acoustic measures to deliver a quiet cabin, including the use of active noise cancellation, found in some Cadillac models, on the four-cylinder versions. This feature uses microphones and sound waves to counteract unwanted noise and thus keep your vehicle quieter.
A console divides the front seats in the 2014 Chevrolet Impala. As far as safety goes, GM definitely made some improvements in the Impala by adding the following optional safety features typically found on luxury cars: A forward collision-alert system and lane-departure warning are two very cool safety features added to the Impala. But even better yet, the 2014 Chevrolet Impala will be equipped with a collision-mitigation system that alerts the driver of an impending crash and applies the brakes.
The Impala will come in three trim levels: LS, LT and LTZ. It will be assembled at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck plant, where current models like the Chevy Volt and Malibu also are assembled, and at its factory in Oshawa, Ontario, where the current Malibu is made.
Chevy's Revamped Lineup and Future Plans
The redesigned Impala will be a part of a much improved car roster that makes us completely forget about Chevy's of even three years ago.
The Chevy Cruze compact replaced the lackluster Cobalt in fall 2010 and has quickly become the brand's top-selling car. The Chevy Sonic, created to replace the Aveo, has monthly sales nearly triple of those of the Aveo. This summer, Chevy will release its first mini-car with the U.S. launch of the Spark.
GM also redesigned the Chevy Malibu for the 2013 model year, the car that started the sedan revilval with its redesign in 2008. (For more on the 2013 Malibu go to : http://jerryschevynews.blogspot.com/2012/03/2013-chevrolet-malibu.html)
Last month, GM stated that for 2013 Chevrolet's NASCAR teams will replace the Impala with a new vehicle that will closely resemble a production version also planned for sale in U.S. showrooms. This has led to speculation that Chevy is planning to make a RWD performance sedan similar to the Chevy Caprice, which is seen in the U.S as police vehicles. The Rear Wheel Drive sedan could be a nice fit to compete with Chrysler’s Charger, which has been very successful.

It has a new hood that is a variation of the power dome hood equipped on Malibu’s and Camaro’s with a three-bar upper and two-bar lower grille design.
The Chevy designers took the new look one step further by removing the split mesh and stocking the re-designed Traverse with chrome accents, new headlights, and fog lights with sculpted front corners similar to those on the Malibu sedan. The new fog lights will give the Traverse a sportier look than previous models. The new Chevy Traverse also has less plastic covering than the outgoing model.
At the rear, Chevy’s engineers opted to give the Traverse a cleaner look by giving it redesigned taillights and a new license-plate pocket.
Interior
2013 Chevrolet Traverse Interior photoInside the 2013 Chevy Traverse buyers will notice that it has more soft-touch materials on the instrument panel and front-door upper area than the outgoing model. The seats have new contrast stitching, and the interior cabin is decorated with blue light accents.

MyLink lets drivers synchronize their cell phones to their vehicle for hands-free dialing and audio capabilities.
Under the Hood and Safety
Under the hood, the 2013 Chevy Traverse is equipped with a direct-injection 3.6-liter V6 engine, which pushes 281 hp. The redesigned Traverse is also equipped with the rebound springs in the front struts for increased roll control. The new rebound springs help improve the ride and handling of the vehicle. New shock valves in the 2013 Traverse will help deliver a better ride when driving at slower speeds.
The 2013 Traverse gets the same safety features of the current model but adds a new front-center airbag to keep vehicle occupants safe during side impact crashes.
What’s the Word?
When reached for comment, Chris Perry, vice president of global marketing and strategy for Chevrolet, said the restyled front end of the 2013 Chevrolet Traverse "is more modern and brings it in line with the overall Chevrolet design." He also stated that he believes the Traverse’s interior improvements will be its strongest new selling point for potential car buyers.
Pricing hasn't yet been announced for the redesigned 2013 Chevy Traverse. It’s set to go into production later this year.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu

We just got our first 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in our show room, and we could not wait to get inside of one.

What we found is that the Chevy team took the Malibu and gave it some flashy new improvements. We have to say, Chevy did not disappoint with the 2013 Malibu.

Exterior

As soon as you start walking around the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu you get the feeling that it’s a completely different vehicle. We had the coincidence of having a 2012 model right in front of the 2013, so we got to do some firsthand comparisons.

One difference we noticed is that the 2013 model loses 4.5 inches in wheelbase. But you would barely be able to notice due to the fact that the 2013 Malibu’s has more than 3 cubic feet overall interior space than the 2012 Malibu. The 2013 Malibu has also grown 2.7 inches wider, which gives passenger a great increase in shoulder and hip room to compensate for the minimal loss in legroom and front headroom. Overall it’s not a bad trade off, as the considerable increase in passenger room makes the vehicle much more comfortable.

The 2013 Malibu is equipped with an Ecotec 2.4L engine and six-speed transmission, producing 182 hp @ 6200 rpm and 172 ft-lbs. @ 4900 rpm of torque. It is equipped with the eAssist system which uses power stored in the lithium-ion battery to provide needed electrical boost in various driving scenarios.

The 0.5 kWh, 115V lithium-ion battery and the 15-kW motor-generator unit help increase fuel economy and provide regenerative braking, which gives up to 15 kW of electricity to charge the battery. It also gives up to 15 hp of electric power assistance to the vehicle during heavier acceleration, and cuts off gasoline use when stopped, using electricity instead. Another cool feature of the eAssist is that it has a fuel cut-off feature during deceleration down to zero mph which further increases your fuel savings.

Interior

The interior of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu left us completely wowed. The interior was redesigned to fit the part of a luxury sedan, yet offers a sporty look that will please the younger crowd as well.

The 2013 Chevy Malibu is equipped with memory seating and mirrors, a very convenient feature if you have multiple drivers. It has a Tilt and telescopic steering wheel that is wrapped in leather and has a wood grain base, to give it that luxurious look you can brag about.

As we mentioned earlier, the 2013 Malibu has a roomier interior than last model. It is also equipped with Interior blue lights, which look great and give the Malibu a fantastic look, especially when driving at night.

The 2013 Malibu is designed to be very ergonomic. It is equipped with a one touch assist button for the sun roof, making it easy to open and shut it. It also has a sliding front glove box that the driver can use as an arm rest, and a driver’s information center that can be seen on the dashboard and accessed by the driver. For the passengers in the back, the back of the 2013 Malibu has a storage compartment with cup holders mounted.
Lastly the 2013 Malibu has a roomy passenger glove box, as well as a cubby behind the infotainment system, for easy storage access for the driver.

Speak of the devil; the 2013 Malibu is equipped with a fantastic infotainment system that has a USB port hook up and an auxiliary input for your Ipod, USB stick and image files. You can access music or photos on the infotainment screen.

Safety Features

The 2013 Chevy Malibu does not come short on safety features. It is equipped with 4-wheel ABS, Front and rear head airbags, Dual front side-mounted airbags, Child seat anchors, a Remote anti-theft alarm system, Emergency braking assist, Rear door child safety locks, Daytime running lights, Dusk sensing headlamps, traction and Stability control, Electronic brake force distribution, a Post-collision safety system, Tire pressure monitoring  and Electric Park Assist.

One safety feature we are absolutely in love with is the lane detection feature on the 2013 Malibu. The lane detection feature has a sensor that lets the driver know when he/she is too close to other vehicles/obstacles as well as when the driver is not driving between the lines. This is a very convenient safety feature that is sure to help prevent future accidents.

Verdict

The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu is a sure winner in our book. The outside looks like a sporty sedan, yet has the luxurious interior of much pricier vehicles for part of the cost (it has a MSRP starting at $25,235). The interior offers a roomy and comfortable feel, with a fantastic infotainment system that will surely entertain the whole family.
