Jerry's visits Perry Hall Middle School

January 11, 2012- Last week members of Jerry’s Auto Group made a special visit to Perry Hall Middle
School in Baltimore, MD in an effort to teach Ms. Laura Britton’s 8th grade environmental science class about the new environmentally friendly vehicles available in today’s car market.
Jennifer Whitley and Carlos Garcia were accompanied by Kevin Kyler (from Jerry’s Chevrolet) and Fletcher Dixon (From Jerry’s Toyota) for the special visit.

However, they didn’t come empty handed …

The group of Jerry’s team members brought along with them a 2012 Chevrolet Volt and a 2012 Toyota Prius and gave the Perry Hall Middle School 8th a tour of each vehicle, with Fletcher Dixon handling the Prius tour and Kevin Kyler running the Chevy Volt tour.

The tour given to the students included each vehicles exterior design, the interior, a run through of the special features and a sit down inside the vehicle to explain the niche of each car. After the formal part of the tour the students then were able to play around with the cars and inspect each vehicles features on their own.  “I felt it was important to teach my students about fuel efficient cars because they will become the future consumers”, said Ms. Britton, “I want them to be educated consumers that are able to make the best choice for themselves and the environment.”

Since the hybrids inception in 2000 its sales numbers in the US grew from 9,500 in 2000 to 88,000 in 2004. By the end of 2005, the number of hybrid cars in the U.S grew to over 212,000, more than doubling 2004 sales figures. By 2006 254,545 new hybrid vehicles were registered in the U.S.

Living in a world of environmental consciousness and high gas prices many more car buyers are turning to environmentally friendly vehicles to save the environment and their money.  And with Toyota’s release of new additions to the Prius family (The Prius V was released this years to rave reviews along with the Prius Plug-in, and the Prius C is scheduled for release this year) it is easy to see why the rise in popularity.

One feature that the kids loved about the Chevy Volt was the impressive radio system that comes on it. Likewise the Prius received great reviews in the entertainment department due to its ability to connect an I-pod to it.  It seems that the days of “nerdy” green cars has given way to a day of sleeker and more “youth friendly” hybrids and electric cars.

Our experience at Perry Hall Middle School was fantastic, we can’t wait to visit again!
